Share I'd like to add a comment to the conversation. I find it odd that we are here responding to a survey asking what we would like to see in a community hub. Not once have we been asked where we would like to see this hub! The day of the virtual presentation your presented with an alternative location in a subdivision. So now two potentials exist. Is a third potential possible? A parks and rec masterplan spoke to a potential pool location at the school. It also speaks to affordability which our population base can't support without partnership. My choice for a community hub would be in our downtown/Bluewater park hub not in another location that would create two weaker hubs. Our existing facilities should get the proper maintenance required. To build something else will end up requiring maintenance that we are currently not able to afford!!! This whole process is not transparent enough in my opinion and should really be put to the electorate. Thank you. Joe Vanderzand on Facebook Share I'd like to add a comment to the conversation. Joe Vanderzand asked almost 3 years agoThank you for providing us with your comments, Joe. They will be considered along with the other comments gathered throughout the public and stakeholder engagement process of this Study.
To reply to a few of your key points, the direction from Council was to undertake a feasibility study to see what amenities should be considered for a community Hub; the location is not the focus of this Study. To provide context for the participants, the Public Engagement Session discussed, in brief, the two main potential locations: Jenny Street, or a potential second option within the Wiarton Meadows Development (in what has been referred to as the Wiarton Southlands area). No location has been finalized as both locations would require intermediate steps, for example, in the case of Jenny Street, the Town would need to obtain planning approvals, and in the case of the Southern site, an agreement would need to be struck between the property owner and the Town and formally sever the Hub site from the parcel. Both locations would require servicing studies to support the sites. However, those are the locations being considered, as the Town does not own any land parcels that would amount to the 9-15 acres required for a Community Hub, including the current arena site, and no other viable alternatives have presented themselves at this time.
At the end of the day, this Study is intended to provide Council with additional insight into a possible business model and the future demands for these potential amenities. We not only have to consider the population and demographics of today, but also the future population as a potential facility would have a theoretical lifespan of about 50 years. Lastly, we must take into account the lifecycle status of the facilities we are replacing; the pool and arena are aged and require major repairs to keep them functional, but unless we also undertake significant retrofits, they would still never be able to meet today's standards, in, for example, accessibility, inclusion, layout/size and general functionality. We have to consider all of these factors in planning the long-term best value for money for the Town and providing amenities for its residents and visitors for the next 50 years.
Thanks for writing to us,
